Dragons prowl Mobile's streets

They've seen fire, and they've seen rain.

And on Saturday, Mobile-area revelers got something they haven't had much of this season: beautiful, warmish weather and relatively disaster-free parades. Well, nothing burst into flames, anyway.

Orangewood's Gendreau is Central Florida boys soccer player of year

Last weekend during a club soccer game, Alan Gendreau approached the man whose career numbers he's chasing.

"He asked me if I was nervous between my junior and senior years," said Mark Keymont, Bishop Moore's boys soccer coach, whose 144 career high-school goals between 1980 and 1982 is second only to Pine Ridge's Jason Mroczkowski's 154 goals between 1995 and 1998. "I told him not to be nervous. Just play the game, and things will fall into place."

With 136 career goals, Gendreau, a junior at Orangewood Christian, is closing in on both marks.

"Living up to expectations, it's a nerve-racking thing," Gendreau said. "Coming into a season and knowing that you could break the record, it's just kind of nerve-racking."

If Gendreau continues at the pace he was on this season, he has nothing to worry about.

Road rage doc receives discharge

A Belle River doctor who was previously fined for physically and emotionally abusing patients received a conditional discharge Friday for a case of road rage in which he punched a woman in the face.

In handing down the decision, which carries 12 months probation for Dr. Charles Rathe, Justice Micheline Rawlins said the road rage was "an isolated act in an otherwise exemplary life."

Rawlins also took issue with the prosecution's suggestion that the assault was even more aggravating because Rathe punched a woman. She said she was "standing up for women" and that the suggestion by assistant Crown attorney George Spartinos was "sexist."
