Women's history celebration begins March 3

Our monthlong series of events, titled Women Inspiring Hope and Possibility, will cover diverse topics, such as the space program, feminism, pro-life stereotypes and pro-choice viewpoints,'' said Patricia Milhoff, director of UA's Women's Studies Program. ''We are hopeful that the entire Akron community will visit our campus during Women's History Month.''

All events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. For information, call 330-972-7008.

Here is the lineup: March 3

• Costello, who is now a contributor to CNN's The Situation Room, will appear at 7 p.m. at the Martin University Center. March 4

• Red Flag Campaign Kickoff, noon to 2 p.m., Room 335, Student Union. Red flags will be displayed to raise awareness and prevent dating violence.

Economic news extends rally

Bond insurers have been hurt in the fallout from the mortgage and credit crises, and news of their problems has shaken the market. But those seeking good news found some in a Labor Department report that said the number of people seeking unemployment benefits last week fell for a fourth straight week. Applications for benefits dropped 1,000 to 301,000, pushing claims down to the lowest level in four months. .

The driver’s ed everybody needs

Why am I doing this? Two reasons, actually.

Reason No. 1 A public relations flak e-mailed me out of the blue and asked if I would like to come be a guinea pig at the Aspen Motorsports Parks new winter driving school before it opened to the public. Full disclosure: She promised free breakfast and lunch.

Reason No. 2 The e-mail made it sound as if there might be a chance to do doughnuts on a huge patch of ice in a front-wheel-drive Ford Escort going about 40 miles an hour. The idea of this alone was enough to make me skip a morning of powder turns. While driving around the new winter track set up at the privately-owned Woody Creek club, however, it becomes readily apparent to me that theres another reason Im here.

Reason No. 3 I need this course like Britney needs round-the-clock counseling.

Celebrities who live in the area include Jennifer Aniston, Pierce Brosnan, Sting, Mel Gisbon, Bill Murray, Robert Redford, Courteney Cox and her husband David Arquette, Tom Hanks, Richard Gere, Goldie Hawn, Sean Penn and David Duchovny.

Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in seven counties, and fire-fighters don't expect to be able to extinguish the raging blaze until Tuesday (23.10.07) or Wednesday (24.10.07).

Malibu resident Jim Palmer, 61, said: "I looked up towards the canyon and everything was just red - it was absolutely terrifying."

Loyola boys' soccer team advances in shootout

Loyola of Los Angeles' goalkeeper John Bunkall stopped two penalty kicks and led the host Cubs to a 4-1 shootout win Wednesday against Long Beach Wilson in Southern Section Div. I wild-card action.

Bunkall stopped Wilson's second and third attempts, and his teammates did the rest as the Cubs defeated the Bruins after the teams fought through four 10-minute overtime periods with the score tied at 1-1.

"I just reacted and I went with my gut decision," Bunkall said. "Thank goodness our guys scored, if they didn't score it wouldn't have meant anything. It was an exciting game and hopefully we'll come out strong against Santa Margarita."

The Cubs (16-5-7) travel to top-seed Santa Margarita (16-3-4) Friday for a rematch of last year's Div. I final, which ended in a 1-1 tie.

"We played Wilson last year when they were the No.

Candidates up for south central Mesa challenges

Finter supports building more fire and police stations, but he thinks voters will reject the bond measure in its current form so soon after a proposed primary property tax "went down in flames" in 2006.

Finter believes the proposed capital improvements are too important to risk defeat because of the way they would be funded. He would prefer paying for them with an additional sales tax.

"First, we have to re-establish credibility with the citizens of Mesa," he said.

Finter's stance on the property tax has made some waves. Although the Mesa Chamber of Commerce endorsed him, it said they had reservations about his views.

"I'm not very happy with Mr. Finter not supporting the secondary property tax, but I like Alex and think he's a good man, so hopefully he'll come around," Whalen said.
