No problem: Sia at Fillmore in San Francisco

TRY as you might, you just can't help yourself. There's simply no proven method for resisting the charms of the lovably daffy Australian chanteuse Sia Furler.

During a recent backstage chat promoting her new "Some People Have Real Problems" set, the kooky kitten was sporting a billowy men's business shirt as a dress and clear plastic flats she'd adorned with glue-on eyes.

And she was busily manning a bicycle pump, blowing up what she'd dubbed "my balloon babies," fuzzy inflatable animals that would adorn her concert stage that night.

In no time, she'd flipped open her laptop — laminated with the same faux-childish artwork she did on the "Problems" cover — and scrolled through countless photos of her two pound-adopted dogs, Lick Lick and Pantera.

"My dog walker back in New York sends me these pictures, Furler, who performs under the single moniker Sia (pronounced ''See-ya"), says with a giggle.

HEAR HOT CHIP HERE

Ready for the Floor is the boom tune people will return to again and again, an anthem for misfits looking to waltz beyond the dancefloor, with Alexis Taylor's soulful yelp providing the geeky male lead (see review at right). Shake a Fist is a dizzy skyscraper of a track, full to the brim with sonic smarts and tricks yet hard-wired to a snaking, nagging groove. More wordy fare is provided by the softshoe r'n'b of Wrestlers and the hugely Hot Chippy Hold On, in which the band's bookish tendencies meet their hedonistic selves head on.

As great leaps go, Made in the Dark lands very much on its feet. www.hotchip.co.uk . JIM CARROLL.

Mountain Bike Pioneer Leaves Imprint

CUPERTINO, CAPerhaps no one knew mountain biking pioneer John Finley Scott better than longtime friend Vance Sprock. Sprock, current owner of the Cupertino Bike Shop in Northern California, met its previous owner Scott for the first time in 1974. Scott was serving as chairman of the Davis Double Century. I was a young 16-year-old and soon-to-be budding cyclist, Sprock said. When I registered for that event, I recall reading this beautifully crafted route description. I wondered about who had written this entertaining, witty and insightful guide. Thus was the beginning of a lifelong friendship, cut short last year when convicted felon Charles Kevin Cunningham murdered Scott. Cunningham was sentenced in early December to 31 years, four months to life for Scotts death. Scott was 72 years old.

Deerfield annexation talks begin

Utica's Common Council begins to discuss a Deerfield Annexation bill and the session attracts a large crowd from Deerfield. The southern border of Deerfield extends to Utica's Bagg's Square area. Annexation would move that border about one mile to the north. The advantages to Deerfield, say those who favor annexation, would be that the area of the town annexed would get city police and fire protection, which would result in lower insurance rates. Utica also would extend to the area city water and gas mains as well as school facilities. Among Utica's advantages would be getting room to relocate the Mohawk River away from its current location at Bagg's Square and move it one mile north. That would rid the city of flooding problems along lower Genesee Street and give it room to build factories there and, perhaps, a new railroad passenger terminal. Opponents in Utica say the expense of annexation would be too great for the benefits received. 1908, 100 years ago Billboards banned Common Council members in Utica pass an ordinance prohibiting – under penalty of a $25 fine – the erection of "unsightly" billboards within city limits.

Blog: Science Reseacher: Arctic Temperatures "Not Especially Warm"

Every time I see this I wonder where the bears keep their soda to keep it from freezing in those temperatures. Forget chapped lips too, since those bottles needed bottle openers I always picture them walking funny from storing and opening all those Cokes. .

Big-ticket bikes: Why buy a Chevette when you can have a Ferrari?

Sandro doesn't want you to know where he lives, where he works or even what his last name is. He has a secret - a lie, some might call it - that mustn't get out.

But here it is anyway: Sandro paid $7,000 for a bicycle. Why the cloak-and-dagger act?

"My wife would probably kill me if she knew," he says discreetly from work. "I told her I bought it with my sister."

Like many big-spending weekend warriors, he fell for Cannondale Bicycle, a company whose bikes have been ridden to stage victories at the Tour de France and world championships in mountain biking.

"Why have a Chevette when you can have a Ferrari?" says Sandro, who rides a few hours a week during the warmer months to keep in shape.

On Monday, Montreal-based Dorel Industries announced a deal to buy Cannondale for about $200-million (U.S.).

Liberals support Afghan extension until 2011

Richard Stanczak from Corunna, Canada writes: I heartily agree with Rachel M., it is good that the ConLibs have eliminated the need for us ignorant, cowardly citizens to have a say in how our country is being run.'

----------

richard, as spicydoc posted on another thread, you had a say in how the country is being run when you voted (if you voted). if you voted conservative, then you knew they were hoping to extend the mission. if you voted liberal, then depending on the day, you may have well voted for an extension of the mission. if you dont like what these two parties are doing, you have other choices.

'F.T. Ward from Canada writes: It lets NATO off the hook and ties Canada into an obligation that costs us at least $6 million per day now and certainly much more in following years.'

---------

the mission is indeed expensive.
