B.C. inventor wants to put pop bottle rocket into orbit

CHILLIWACK, B.C. - Mr. Widget wants to go to space.

Ken Schellenberg, who has adopted the alter-ego on his company website, wants to put a simple but highly engineered bottle rocket into orbit.

This could be impossible, but the CEO of AntiGravity Research already holds the altitude record for boosting an elongated plastic pop bottle - propelled by a bicycle pump, water and a bit of soap - into the air.

Firing the ubiquitous, two-litre plastic container usually consigned to the recycle bin into space might create a whole new definition for space junk, but the dream keeps Schellenberg going.

Interbike, CamelBak, Zipp & more

The 2009 Interbike show may be the last one held in Las Vegas, Nevada for a while as a replacement venue was discussed as part of a breakfast meeting during the Bicycle Leadership Conference (BLC) held last month. The current long term contract with North America's largest bicycle trade show and the hosting Sands Expo and Convention Centre is set to expire after the 2009 event.

The relocation of Interbike has been a hotly debated subject over the past few years as its current setting has proven to be fairly contentious among the show's participants. Even so, the size and scope of the show greatly limit the list of potential candidates and force practical realities to overshadow emotion. Interbike's Industry Consultant, Lance Camisasca, outlined host city requirements as the following:

Contiguous exhibit space of at least 65,000 square metres (700,000 gross square feet)
A large and diverse selection of hotels, restaurants and entertainment options conveniently located to the events
An international airport located within close proximity to the event
An outdoor demo site with great weather, extensive cross country/downhill trails and a closed road loop, and
An event market that is recognized as a cycling culture destination.

Anger at Pembrokeshire's "poor" train service

A 22-year-old Kilgetty man has demanded an apology from Arriva Trains Wales for poor train services which have frequently left him unable to get to work.

Ben Large depends on public transport to get to Pembroke School where he works as a cover supervisor. Since October he has missed a morning's work on five separate occasions due to the train not turning up.

Ben has never needed to own a car and has only found the train system to be problematic after returning to Pembrokeshire.

He said: "I have personally incurred a loss of earnings because of failures in the system where the promised alternative transport is either ridiculously late or non-existent.

"What's laughable about it is that they've now raised their fares."

He added: "It's disgusting coming from a public service, especially when the Government is trying to persuade everyone to go green'.

Estate sales: Adventure to the past

Rogers, a bargain hunter herself, bought her two-bedroom, two-bath house nine years ago in Shadow Lakes for $61,500. The house overlooks a retention pond that is also a bird sanctuary.

"I had spent a wonderful year when I was in high school with an aunt and uncle who lived in Clearwater," she recalls. "After that I always wanted to live in Florida. I'm just one of those people who loves Florida."

Rogers, who is divorced, lives with her two dogs, Beau, a black lab/Great Dane mix, and Squeaky, a boxer/terrier mix she rescued while volunteering at the Pasco Animal Welfare Society thrift shop in New Port Richey.

"I walk my dogs almost every day in Starkey Park," she says.

Animals and the environment are of great importance to her: She is a supporter of such groups as Pasco Wildlife Inc.

Fireball mum in fight for life

A MOTHER is fighting for her life after suffering horrific burns when she became a "human fireball".

Yvonne Buckley, aged 38, was discovered in flames by her teenage son, Alex, in the living room of their home in Holly Grove, Brownlow Fold.

He dashed for help as Ms Buckley's partner rushed to extinguish the flames with his bare hands.

Marinelli likes to needle college players

You put the guy on the defensive and then you'll see how he works out of that. You break him down a little bit and see what he's about.''

Marinelli also said a big part of getting information on a player is to talk to his college coaches. Marinelli was asked if he could only talk to one - and only one - coach, who would it be?

"I would probably say the strength coach and not even the lead strength coach,'' Marinelli said. "They see that guy in a different light every day. Or the trainer, one of those two guys. The trainer will tell you and the strength coach will sometimes tell you if the guy could've come back earlier on a sprained ankle. Can he play with some pain? What's he like out of that environment? Sometimes it's hard for college coaches to say 'This guy is a bad guy.' And it's on us to go do our research.''
