Players want more noonball

Noon basketball is enjoying a revitalization at the Whitney Recreation Center in St. Cloud.

The recreational basketball games are co-ed opportunities for people to play basketball games during their lunch hours.

Although noonball — as members call it — has been offered by the city for decades, organizers said they had seen a sharp decrease in players attending the three-times-a-week activity.

"Over the past year or so, the numbers have dropped off to literally zero," said Todd Cariveau, a regular noonball player who has spearheaded the effort to bring the activity back to life.

The cost and some players' overly competitive nature led to the decline, said Cariveau and John Anderson, recreation supervisor for the city's Recreation Department.

Murano improves on style, safety

When Nissan Guam location sales manager Enzo Turrini first bought the second generation of the Nissan Murano back in 2004, his wife hadn't yet bought in to the idea of vehicle's futuristic look. The trend of massive sports utility vehicles was changing for a market looking for style and road comforts.

A few models later, Nissan has again struck gold with its style, Turrini says, also improving on many safety features.

Traversing the cost of paths, sidewalks

Bruce Steidinger gives the Rockford area high marks for its network of bike paths that snake along more than 20 miles of the Rock River, Willow Creek and Perryville Road. There's just one problem. There are a lot of gaps in the system. "For most people who live in and around Rockford, you're stuck in your neighborhood if you want to ride your bike," said Steidinger, owner of Shosie's Cyclery in Loves Park. "We've got a lot of great paths. We need to get them connected. Even when I get the chance to leave the shop and go biking, I've got to put the bike on the car rack and drive out to where I can ride." Steidinger's critique comes as no surprise to local transportation planners. Rockford Area Transportation Study — the region's transportation planning group — meets today to adopt a study that recommends construction of nearly 228 miles of sidewalks and 425 miles of bicycle and pedestrian paths and on-street bike lanes throughout the Rock River Valley.

Open house marks TPD's 150th birthday

Being a police officer looks like fun, 7-year-old Hunter Ewert said Sunday after watching Topeka police operate a bomb robot and ride around on a Segway Personal Transporter.

"I like doing these kinds of things," Hunter said as he attended an open house at police headquarters with members of his family.

ID for body parts found 15 years ago

DNA technology has been used to identify the remains of a man whose body parts were found at three different sites in Sydney 15 years ago.

A truck driver found the torso of the man identified today as father-of-three Wayne Robert Chant, 47, in 1992, in Sydney's south.

His legs and left arm were found days later at two other sites across southern Sydney but the man's hands, right arm and head have never been found.

NSW Police homicide squad commander Geoff Beresford said advances in DNA techniques had finally confirmed the man's identity.

A targeted homicide investigation could now get underway, he said in a statement.

"As a result of innovations in DNA technology, the remains have recently been identified through comparison with a sample supplied by Mr Chant's late mother," Det Supt Beresford said.

Viewer Comments On Snowmobiling Safety

I think that the same laws for drunk driving in a registered vehicle for road use should be the same for a snowmobile/ATV's/Jet skis, any of the "toys". I feel that ANYTHING operated by a motor, one of the above mentioned or even a ride on lawn mower, should have the same regulations as the vehicles used on the road ways(have you seen "cops"?). For goodness sake, you can be fined and ticketed for operating a boat impaired. Why? Is it just because it needs to be registered and licensed with the state like road use vehicles. Well if that's the case, then any motor driven "vehicle" should have the same regulations. It should be regulatory, as with motorcycles, to wear helmets on snowmobiles. Even though having one alcoholic drink doesn't put most people over the legal limit, it does impair you.
