City commissioners vote to require owners of vacant structures in ...

“We’ve presented a proposed sign ordinance draft to the Planning Commission, but they decided to continue the issue for, I think, 30 days,” Brown said in a pre-meeting briefing. “If they review (the ordinance) and recommend approval, it could be available by your March night meeting.”

Commissioners also voted to grant the Downtown Merchants Association an exemption to the city’s open-container law from 11 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Saturday during the annual Mardi Gras celebration, and approved a request by Downtown Manager Don Buie to pass an ordinance requiring owners of vacant structures to register the structure with the Planning Department within 10 days of receiving notice of the designation by Code Enforcement.

“It’s a matter of safety,” Buie said after the meeting. “By giving a detailed registration of a vacant structure, the owners will provide police, fire and EMS an accounting of any potential dangers associated with the structure.

Big interview: Brad Gilbert

Better still, perhaps I should ask Brad Gilbert and Jimmy Connors, their respective new coaches."

"And what did I say?" he asks. "You asked me to explain what a skivvy was, then you said, ‘Well, if you’re a highly paid skivvy, you are not a coach’."

"Yes, that’s it. A coach should wear different hats; some days you’re a friend, some days a tactician, some days a strategist, but the important thing is that you should have a predetermined thought of what you need to be."

"Do you want me to put that in?" I ask. "Yeah." "No problem." "There was another question about Andre [Agassi]."

"Yeah, but I haven’t transcribed that yet. Will I call you later this afternoon?"

"Yeah, thanks, buddy."

U.S. plans for falling satellite

Military agencies, he said, are doing an analysis to determine which pieces most likely would survive re-entry. But he cautioned that officials won't have much detail on where or when it will crash until it begins to move through the atmosphere and break up.

Renuart added that there does not as yet appear to be much concern about sensitive technologies on the satellite falling into enemy hands.

Tax Cap will top tonight's Dover City Council discussion

The council is also scheduled to vote on a proposal to form an ad-hoc cable access committee, which would develop recommendations for the organizational structure for two access channels.

Under the city's cable renewal agreement with Comcast, which was made in November, the cable provider agreed to use a franchise fee to fund the existing governmental access channel, commonly known as Channel 22, and a new educational access channel.

If passed, the committee would advise the city and school department on the construction of studio facilities and recommend operational procedures.

The five person committee, which would provide a report to the council by September, would consist of three members of the public, one member of the School Board and one member of the City Council.

Power crisis hits industry hard

The Punjab State Electricity Boards (PSEB) decision to shut down induction furnace units in the state to tackle the ongoing power crisis has shocked almost 10,000 units in the engineering, cycle parts manufacturing and furnace industry.

Furthermore, the electricity board has increased industrial cuts to more than eight hours every day, a measure that industry says would cripple it.

The decision has a direct bearing on over 30,000 workers in the 150 induction furnace units in the state and at least 25 per cent of the workforce in other industries. Besides, industry like cycle and cycle parts manufacturers, auto ancillary units and other engineering goods manufacturing units, which get their raw material supply from induction furnace units, will be directly hit.

Industrialists say it has become difficult for them to retain workforce as their work has drastically come down and workers want to shift to other states.
